World Cleanup Day 2026: Turning Environmental Commitment into Action

Environmental responsibility is not something that happens once a year. It is a long-term commitment, one that becomes meaningful when it translates into action.

For TP Greece, this commitment has been part of our journey for years. Through Citizen of the Planet, we work to reduce our environmental impact. At the same time, we encourage people to take an active role in protecting the world around them.

This year, that commitment brought us to Lake Volvi, in the Thessaloniki region, as part of World Cleanup Day 2026.

Together with Save Your Hood, our volunteers spent the day learning about the area and exploring its ecosystem. They also took part in a cleanup action, turning environmental awareness into something practical and collective.

Why World Cleanup Day Matters

World Cleanup Day has grown into a global movement that brings people, communities, organizations and businesses together around a shared responsibility: keeping our environment clean and addressing the wider challenge of mismanaged waste.

In 2026, World Cleanup Day is officially observed on 20 September, following its recognition as a United Nations International Day. The global movement goes beyond picking up litter. In fact, it is about encouraging people to take responsibility for the places they call home and showing what collective action can achieve.

For TP in Greece, participating in that movement is a natural extension of the environmental work we have been building over time.

Why Lake Volvi?

Lake Volvi is part of the Koronia–Volvi protected area, an important natural environment in Central Macedonia with significant ecological value and rich biodiversity. The area provides habitats for a wide range of species, including birds. Therefore, protecting its natural environment is particularly important.

That is why the day was designed to be about more than a cleanup.

Before picking up a single piece of litter, our volunteers had the opportunity to learn more about the lake through an environmental briefing, guided tour and birdwatching. As a result, understanding the place we were helping to protect made the action more meaningful.

From Awareness to Action

Environmental awareness matters. But awareness on its own does not create change. The real value comes when knowledge leads to action.

At Lake Volvi, our people had the opportunity to contribute directly, working together with Save Your Hood to remove waste and help care for the surrounding environment. It was a simple action, but one with a clear message. We all have a role to play in protecting the places around us.

For businesses, environmental responsibility also means creating opportunities for people to participate, learn and contribute beyond the workplace. That is an important part of TP Greece’s approach to Citizen of the Planet. Our environmental commitment is not limited to reducing our own footprint. It also includes engaging employees and the wider community through environmental awareness and action.

Continuing a Long-Term Commitment

From cleanups and environmental education to initiatives focused on biodiversity and local ecosystems, TP Greece continues to build on its environmental commitments year after year.

Because meaningful sustainability is not defined by a single cleanup. It is built through consistent choices, long-term partnerships and the willingness to act together.
